World Cup: Uruguay dominate Russia

ANKARA (AA) - Uruguay defeated Russia 3-0 in the World Cup Monday to claim leadership of Group A.

Uruguay took an early lead in Samara when Barcelona striker Luis Suarez scored a free kick in the 10th minute.

In the 23rd minute, Uruguay doubled the lead when Russian midfielder Denis Cheryshev scored an own goal.

Near the end of the match Edinson Cavani made it three for Uruguay. He had previously scored World Cups in 2010 and 2014.

Meanwhile Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, 32, made his 100th appearance for Uruguay.

In Group A, Uruguay and Russia are through to the Round of 16. Uruguay leads Group A with nine points and Russia follow with six.

- Saudi Arabia stun Egypt with late winner

In the other match of the group Saudi Arabia beat Egypt 2-1 in Volgograd thanks to a late winner from Saudi midfielder Salem al-Dawsari.

Egyptian star forward Mohamed Salah scored the opener in the 22nd minute.

But Salman al-Faraj converted a penalty for Saudi Arabia in the first half's stoppage time.

Saudi Arabia, three points, and Egypt, no points, have already been eliminated from Russia 2018.

Separately Egyptian goalkeeper Essam el-Hadary, 45, became the oldest player to play in a World Cup history.
