Yemen rebels claim to kill Saudi soldiers in attack

SANAA (AA) – Yemen’s Houthi rebel group on Sunday claimed to have killed Saudi soldiers in an attack in the oil-rich kingdom, according to a pro-Houthi television.

Al-Masirah television, citing a military source, said Houthi rebels carried out an attack in the southwestern Jizan region.

Several Saudi soldiers were reportedly killed and injured in the attack, the source said, but without giving any further details.

There was no comment from the Saudi-led coalition on the rebel claim.

In recent months, Houthi rebels have claimed several drone attacks on Saudi airports near the country’s border with Yemen.

Yemen has been beset by violence and chaos since 2014, when the Iran-aligned Houthi rebels overran much of the country, including capital Sanaa. The crisis escalated in 2015 when a Saudi-led military coalition launched a devastating air campaign aimed at rolling back Houthi territorial gains.

According to UN figures, Yemen is facing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with more than 10 million people driven to the brink of famine. More than 22 million people in Yemen are desperate for humanitarian aid and protection.
