Yemen’s Houthis slam Trump veto of anti-war resolution

Veto ‘implicates US in massacres, crimes’ in war-weary Yemen, rebel group says

SANAA (AA) - Yemen’s Houthi rebel group on Wednesday slammed U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to veto a congressional resolution on ending U.S. participation in the ongoing war in Yemen.

In a tweet, Houthi spokesman Mohamed Abdul-Salam asserted that Trump’s veto “serves to implicate the U.S. in all the massacres, crimes and unjust sieges that Yemen continues to suffer from”.

The veto, he added, “confirms that the U.S. isn’t only involved in this aggression against Yemen, but is also the conflict’s prime mover”.

On Tuesday, Trump vetoed a congressional resolution, which -- if approved -- would have ended U.S. participation in the ongoing war in Yemen.

“This [congressional] resolution is an unnecessary, dangerous attempt to weaken my constitutional authorities, endangering the lives of American citizens and brave service members, both today and in the future,” Trump said after the veto.

The move was the second veto of Trump’s presidency.

Since 2015, Saudi Arabia -- a close U.S. ally -- has been leading a wide-ranging military campaign against the Houthis in Yemen.

The campaign has devastated Yemen’s infrastructure, including its health and sanitation systems, prompting the UN to describe the situation there as “one of the worst humanitarian disasters of modern times”.
