Zambia deports 190 immigrants for illegal entry

Immigration Department urges immigrants to validate their stay in Southern Africa country

By James Kunda

LUSAKA, Zambia (AA) – Zambia on Thursday announced it deported 190 immigrants who were staying illegally in the country and relocated 95 refugees to camps.

Zambia's Immigration Department carried out a three-day operation in the capital Lusaka from Sunday and took into custody 436 people.

“A total of 95 refugees of different nationalities have been relocated to Mayukwayukwa and Maheba refugee camps as they had no authority to be outside the refugee camps,” said Namati Nshinka, a department spokesman.

“The department has also released 28 of those apprehended after they produced proof of valid immigration status.”

Considered one of Sub-Saharan Africa’s most peaceful nations, Zambia is home to thousands of refugees from Rwanda, Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

On a recent visit to the country, the UN High Commission for Refugees’ special envoy for the Horn of Africa, Mohamed Abdi Affey, commended Zambia for accommodating the refugees who mostly fled from war and are in search of greener pastures.

Nshinka reiterated the call for immigrants to validate their stay in the country, adding that those deported faced repercussions for trying to circumvent the law.
