In a brief statement by the presidency, Hichilema said Zambia and the UK will continue to support each other in key areas of good governance, economy, trade and investment including education and health.

"Other than the common history the two nations share, Zambia and UK will endeavor to promote peace and unity for development," he added.

The Southern African nation is former ex-British colony, and celebrated its 57th independence a week ago.

Hichilema also met UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and leaders of Kenya, Ghana, Congo, Namibia, Angola, Nigeria and Mauritius, among others.

"We must take urgent action on climate change to secure the livelihoods of generations to come," he said.
