Zimbabwe: President launches tourism recovery campaign

Strategy aims to boost domestic tourism as virus tally in southern African country nears 4,400

ANKARA (AA) – Zimbabwe’s president on Thursday launched a campaign to revive the country’s coronavirus-hit tourism industry, local media reported.

Emmerson Mnangagwa visited the tourist landmark Victoria Falls to unveil the “National Tourism Recovery and Growth Strategy,” state-owned newspaper The Herald reported.

The president will tour other key hospitality and tourism facilities on Thursday, before heading out to review progress on the Harare-Beitbridge Highway projects in Bubye and Mvuma on Friday, the report said.

The campaign was started as Zimbabwe’s coronavirus cases increased by 118 to reach 4,339, while three more fatalities took the death toll to 84.

“The main objective of the visit is to launch the National Tourism Recovery and Growth Strategy, which has been approved by the Cabinet. The president will also lead the repackaging of Victoria Falls as the lead destination,” said Mangaliso Ndlovu, minister of environment, tourism, and hospitality.

“He [Mnangagwa] will visit hospitality projects and is actually leading from the front in appreciating the significance of the tourism sector and its contribution to the economy.”

The recovery strategy will initially be focused on boosting domestic tourism, while authorities will monitor and assess the implications of resuming international tourism throughout the remaining months of 2020.

Zimbabwe has a range of tourist activities on offer, including several historical sites, wildlife safaris, and nature and adventure tours.
