Zimbabwe: Ruling party agrees to expel President Mugabe

Decision comes a day after millions take to streets, calling on president to step down

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AA) - Zimbabwe’s ruling party has unanimously agreed to expel President Robert Mugabe, signaling an end to his rule that lasted close to four decades.

This comes a day after street protests in the capital attracted millions of Zimbabwean citizens, who were in unison of calling for the immediate stepping down of the nonagenarian Mugabe.

Although Mugabe still legally remains President, the final nail on his fate would be decided on Tuesday when legislators are expected to impeach him.

On Tuesday, the Zimbabwean military took over the reins of the country and placed Mugabe, his wife and scores of his close ministers under house arrest.

Whilst some say this is a coup, the military say it’s a military takeover meant to deal with “criminals surrounding Mugabe and his wife Grace.

The military’s intervention came after a period of unrest within Mugabe’s ruling Zanu-PF. Last week, Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa was sacked amid a dispute over who would succeed the 93-year-old president.
