Storm causes significant property damage in La Chaux-de-Fonds
ZURICH (AA) - At least one person is dead and many others are injured after a storm tore through the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds in the Neuchatel region bordering France with heavy rains and winds reaching 217 kilometers (135 miles) per hour.
The storm also caused significant property damage, with roofs of houses blown off. Vehicles were also damaged, and there was a traffic accident involving multiple vehicles on the highway.
The Swiss Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology said in a statement that they are trying to determine whether there was a tornado.
The storm's violent winds also uprooted numerous trees, with tree trunks blocking train tracks, causing disruptions to railway transportation in some areas.
