13 killed as powerful quake strikes China

BEIJING (AA) - Thirteen people were killed Tuesday and 175 others injured when a magnitude-7.0 earthquake sruck in the southwest, state media reported.

The Xinhua News Agency said the quake hit Sichuan Province at a depth of 20 kilometers (12 miles and destroyed a large number of homes.

A magnitude-6.6 quake also struck the country’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region at a depth of 11 kilometers (6.8 miles), Xinhua reported.
