ISTANBUL (AA) - A growing number of students are reconsidering their education plans due to concerns about artificial intelligence, according to a new survey in Norway.

The recent Young in Norway Study report by Norwegian social and market analysis agency Opinion found that 14% of students fear AI could replace their future professions, while 25% believe the technology will expand educational opportunities, NRK news reported on Tuesday.

Artificial intelligence expert Lars Rinnan sought to reassure young people, saying the labor market will continue to value “human qualities,” even as automation advances across sectors.

The findings come as thousands of students gathered at an education fair in Lillestrom last week to explore study options and career paths. Some attendees expressed concern that AI tools such as ChatGPT could negatively affect learning habits.

“ChatGPT has made us lazy. Many students struggle to do the basics like writing a 200-word essay,” said Rosell Mahdi, an 18-year-old student.

Her classmate Lara Omar added that increased use of AI to improve grades is “unfair to those who put in the effort.”

Statistics Norway data shows 70% of young people aged 16-24 used AI for educational purposes in 2025, compared with 22% of those aged 25-34. Despite the high usage rate, the figure marks a 10% decline from the previous year.

Research and Higher Education Minister Sigrun Aasland said technological change would transform the labor market but stressed that society would still face shortages of skilled workers. She urged students to pursue higher education and focus on how they can contribute to society.

AI researcher Keith L. Downing of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology warned the technology could have long-term consequences for learning, noting students now have constant access to an “expert” capable of answering assignments at any time.
