NEW DELHI (AA) – At least 16 Indian soldiers were killed in a road accident in the northeastern state of Sikkim, officials said on Friday.

Defense spokesman Lt. Col. Mahendra Rawat, in a statement on Friday, said that 16 soldiers lost their lives in a tragic road accident involving an army truck at Zema, North Sikkim.

“The ill-fated vehicle was part of a three-vehicle convoy that had moved from Chatten in the morning towards Thangu. En route at Zema, the vehicle skidded down a steep slope while negotiating a sharp turn,” he said.

The spokesman said a rescue mission was immediately launched, and four injured soldiers were airlifted.

"Unfortunately, three Junior Commissioned Officers and 13 soldiers succumbed to their injuries sustained in the accident," he said.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said he is deeply pained "by the loss of lives of the Indian Army personnel."

"The nation is deeply grateful for their service and commitment. My condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for the speedy recovery of those who are injured," he wrote on Twitter.
