18 Daesh terrorists killed in Mosul operation: Gov’t

BAGHDAD (AA) - At least 18 Daesh terrorists have been killed by security forces in Iraq’s northern city of Mosul, the Interior Ministry announced on Thursday.

In a statement, Iraqi Federal Police said their forces had launched an operation aimed at securing the heights overlooking Mosul’s southern Makhmour district.

"At least 18 Daesh terrorists were killed in the operation, while several terrorist hideouts were found and destroyed,” the statement read.

Recent months have seen frequent attacks by Daesh militants on security personnel stationed in northern and eastern Iraq.

Last year, officials in Baghdad said Daesh's military capacity had been all but destroyed following a three-year conflict with the Iraqi army and a U.S.-led military coalition.

Nevertheless, the group still maintains a limited presence in certain parts of the country, against which security forces still carry out frequent operations.
