1st Israeli commercial flight goes through Saudi-Omani airspace
Oman allows Israeli civil flights to use its airspace
By Abdelraouf Arnaout
JERUSALEM (AA) – Israel’s national flag carrier El Al said on Monday it operated its first commercial flight from Tel Aviv to Bangkok using the Saudi-Omani airspace.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry said the new air route will cut the flight's duration from Israel to the Thai capital by two hours and a half.
On Thursday, Israel said that the Omani authorities agreed to allow Israeli civil flights to use the Gulf country’s airspace.
"This is an historic decision that will shorten the road to Asia, lower costs for Israeli citizens and help Israeli airlines to be more competitive," Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said.
Saudi Arabia allowed Israeli civil flights to use its airspace in August. Yet, Israeli flights were in need for Omani airspace to fly towards Asian destinations with shortened durations.
Oman and Saudi Arabia don’t have formal relations with Israel.
