Workers, Chinese employers clash after failed negotiations over wages, working conditions

ISTANBUL (AA) - At least two people were killed in clashes at a Chinese-owned nickel mining firm in Indonesia over the weekend.

Local workers fought with their Chinese employers at the Gunbuster Nickel Industry in North Morowali, a district on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, the news website Jakarta Globe reported.

The clashes broke out amid failed negotiations over wages and better working conditions, the report said.

Workers torched machinery and vehicles as riots broke out on Saturday evening, with hundreds of security personnel rushed to the site to quell the violence.

Police confirmed two fatalities on Sunday, while 69 people were detained for questioning, the report added.

“We are working to identify the deceased – a local worker and a foreigner – and investigating the cause of their deaths,” said Rudy Sufahriadi, police chief for the Central Sulawesi district.
