2 mpox cases detected in Russia

MOSCOW (AA)—Two cases of mpox were detected in people who arrived in Russia from Thailand, the Russian sanitary watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said on Monday.

The Interregional Office of Rospotrebnadzor for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region identified two cases of mpox in citizens who have returned from a tourist trip to Thailand, it said in a statement.

The affected individuals were immediately hospitalized, and they are in satisfactory condition, it said.

The circle of people who had contact with the tourists infected with mpox has been identified, and they are under medical observation, it added.

Earlier, three cases of mpox were reported in the Moscow region. One of the patients has been discharged, while two remain under treatment at the Domodedovo hospital.

According to Rospotrebnadzor, the spread of mpox was prevented, but the risks of importing the infection into Russia remain.
