2 South African brothers arrested in Dubai for corruption

ANKARA (AA) – Dubai police said Tuesday they arrested two brothers wanted by South Africa for corruption charges.

In a statement, the police said they received a red notice from the Interpol to arrest Atul and Rajesh Gupta wanted by South African authorities for criminal and money laundering charges.

The statement said arrangements were underway with authorities in South Africa "to complete the legal procedures" for their extradition.

Police said the arrest "reflects the continuous efforts of the UAE in combating money laundering crimes" in coordination with local authorities and international counterparts.

The Gupta brothers, including a third brother, were placed by the US Treasury Department on a sanctions list in 2019 for being "members of a significant corruption network."

Last year, the UAE ratified an extradition treaty with South Africa, which came into effect as of June 2021.
