3 arrested over death of Turkish professor in Colombia

Ramazan Gencal went missing on Dec. 6 in Colombia, found dead on Dec. 27

BOGOTA, Colombia (AA) - Three suspects, including two women, were arrested on Friday in Colombia over their links to the death of a Turkish economics professor who was found dead in December.

Canadian citizen Ramazan Gencay who is a professor at Simon Fraser University went missing in Colombia's Medellin city on Dec. 6. after last seen at a salsa club after he arrived in the city to attend a seminar.

Found dead on Dec. 24 on a riverside at the outskirts of Medellin city, the body was identified to be Gencay on Dec. 27.

According to local media reports based on forensic and police sources, Gencay was suspected to be given a drink or food containing scopolamine, a drug which renders a person incapable of exercising free-will and is widely used by thieves in Colombia.

According to the closed-circuit video cameras of the salsa club, Gencay was seen with some strangers at the place, after which his credit cards were used on Dec. 7-8.
