HAMILTON, Canada (AA) - Three Canadian miners are trapped underground after an overnight accident at a mine in the western province of British Columbia, the nation’s premier confirmed Wednesday.

"We're facing a bit of a situation in British Columbia right now," David Eby told a news conference in Huntsville, Ontario, where Canada's provincial and territorial leaders wrapped up a three-day summer meeting.

"There are three miners that are currently trapped underground. They are, to the best of our knowledge, uninjured, and in a refuge area," he said, noting there was early communication with the Red Chris copper and gold mining company.

Saying that rescue operations are underway, Eby called the local rescue teams “exceptional,” adding that they will be “working overtime to bring the workers home safely to their families."

Two of the trapped workers are from British Columbia and one is from Ontario.

"Obviously, it's very concerning for the families, for the workers in the sector and all British Columbians and Canadians," said Eby.

"Our thoughts are with the families and appreciation with the incredibly brave rescue teams that are working right now," he added.
