4.8 magnitude earthquake hits northwestern Türkiye

Turkish disaster agency says quake 'unlikely to trigger faults passing through the Sea of ​​Marmara south of Istanbul'

ANKARA (AA) - A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit Türkiye’s northwestern Bolu province on Thursday with tremors felt in neighboring cities, including Istanbul and Sakarya.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said the quake struck Bolu province at a depth of 8.1 kilometers (around 5 miles).

The quake occurred at 1.55 p.m. local time (1055GMT).

Meanwhile, Turkish disaster agency AFAD said that earthquakes of this magnitude are unlikely to trigger faults passing through the Sea of ​​Marmara south of Istanbul. A cataclysmic earthquake hit northwestern Türkiye in 1999, claiming more than 18,000 lives.

The most recent tremor came as Türkiye is dealing with the aftermath of devastating Feb. 6 quakes in the southern region that have claimed at least 48,448 lives. More than 13 million people in Türkiye have been affected by the powerful quakes.
