5.4 magnitude earthquake rattles southeastern Iran

No injuries or structural damage confirmed so far

ISTANBUL(AA) - A 5.4‑magnitude earthquake shook southeastern Iran early Tuesday morning, with its epicenter located around 139 kilometers (86 miles) south of Bam in the Kerman province.

The quake occurred at 08.36 am local time (0506GMT), at a depth of approximately 56.7 km (35.2 mi), according to the US Geological Survey.

However, no injuries or structural damage have been confirmed so far.

Iran is located in a seismically active region and has experienced many devastating earthquakes in recent years. The most catastrophic one in the country's recent history occurred in 2013, when a 6.7 magnitude earthquake hit the city of Bam, killing at least 34,000 people. ​​​​​​​

In July 2022, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the southern province of Hormozgan, along the coast of the Persian Gulf, killing at least five people and injuring more than 80.​​​​​​​
