5 die repairing sewerage equipment in north China

Colleagues try and save co-worker overcome by methane fumes who had fallen into water, only to perish themselves

BEIJING (AA) – Five workers have died repairing sewerage equipment in northern China after they attempted to save a colleague who had been overcome by methane fumes.

China Daily reported local rescuers as saying Wednesday that the men had been called out overnight to fix a dysfunctional pump ahead of heavy rains, when one of the men fell into the water.

Several of his colleagues attempted to save him, only to also fall in.

While two were later rescued, five others died.

On Friday, state media reported that weeks of heavy rainfall and flooding had left more than 230 people dead in China while 93 others remain missing.

At least 237 fatalities were recorded after more than 1,508 counties in 28 provinces -- the hardest-hit located in the country’s center and southeast -- suffered from flooding since mid-June.
