5 years on, memories of deadly PKK car bombing haunt victims

3 women police officers and as many civilians killed, 50 others injured

MARDIN, Turkey (AA) - Five years on, traumatic memories of the PKK car bombing in southeastern Turkey continue to haunt eye witnesses and victims alike.

On June 8, 2016, a bomb-laden vehicle exploded outside a police station in Mardin province. Three women police officers -- one of whom was pregnant -- were killed in the blast.

Three civilians also lost their lives and 50 others were wounded.

Nearly 500 people were affected, and 616 shops, houses and vehicles were damaged.

Eye witness Bedii Ertekin told Anadolu Agency that he will never forget the attack.

"It was a terrible explosion which will remain etched in my mind," he said.

Another eye witness, Asli Boga said: “We don't want something like that to ever happen again.”

Nasir Ceker, whose house and workplace suffered severe damage, said: "I hope this doesn't happen to anyone. We condemn all kinds of terrorism. We are glad that a police station will be built at the blast site."

The PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US and EU – has been responsible for the deaths of nearly 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants.

In the years since 2016, the YPG/PKK – the PKK's Syrian offshoot – has also continued to target civilians with car bombs in areas of northern Syria, near Turkey’s border, largely cleared of terrorist groups by Turkish security operations.
