RAMALLAH, Palestine (AA) – At least 55 Palestinians were killed in the two powerful earthquakes that struck Türkiye and Syria, according to a Palestinian diplomat on Tuesday.

Palestinian Ambassador to Türkiye Faed Mustafa told state news agency Wafa that 23 more refugees were confirmed dead in northern Syria, bringing the death toll to 55.

The envoy added that entire Palestinian families were killed in the quakes, without providing any further details.

Ahmed El-Deek, a political adviser to the foreign minister, said 14 Palestinians were killed in Türkiye while 41 others lost their lives in Syria.

According to Wafa, three Palestinian refugee camps in Syria were badly affected by the earthquakes; the Raml camp in Latakia city and Neirab and Handrat camps in Aleppo city.

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck southern Türkiye's Kahramanmaras province early Monday and another magnitude 7.6 quake hit the same area in the afternoon, killing at least 3,432 people and injuring 21,103 others, according to the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

In Syria, government and rescue officials reported that nearly 1,622 people were killed and over 3,649 others wounded in the quakes.
