7 killed, 2 injured in another mass shooting in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG (AA) - Seven people were killed in another mass shooting in South Africa's eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal, police said on Sunday.

According to an official statement, a group of unknown armed men opened fire on people at a shop in Savannah Park in the coastal Durban city, killing six men on the scene, on Saturday night.

A seventh victim, who sustained injuries, was taken to a hospital, where he died on Sunday morning.

Two other people were injured in the incident.

Police said preliminary investigations found that one of the deceased was the owner of the shop, and two of the victims were his sons.

The motive for the attack is still unknown.

In South Africa, mass shootings have become a common phenomenon. Earlier this month, 14 people were killed and nine others were injured in a mass shooting at a bar in the Soweto township near Johannesburg, with Gauteng police commissioner Lt. Gen. Elias Mawela saying that the perpetrators' motive remained unknown.

Also, four people were killed and eight others were injured in a similar incident at a bar in KwaZulu-Natal.

At least 67 people are murdered in the country every day, according to national crime statistics.​​​​​​​
