9 killed in new wave of anti-government protests in Peru

Protests call for early elections and release from jail of former President Pedro Castillo

By Laura Gamba

BOGOTA, Colombia (AA) - At least nine people have died in a fresh wave of anti-government protests in Peru, the Ombudsman's Office reported Monday.

"We ask law enforcement to make a legal, necessary and proportional use of force and we urge the Prosecutor's Office to carry out a prompt investigation to clarify the events," the state agency said.

The deaths occurred in the city of Juliaca in the southern Puno region after clashes near the airport took place Monday. Services at the airport had been suspended Friday due to acts of violence. Protesters have already forced the closure of four airports in Peru since December.

More than 40 people have been injured since protests started last week, said the Health Ministry.

When only one death had been confirmed, President Dina Boluarte issued a statement, pointing out that she had already proposed to bring elections forward in Congress.

"It is not clear what you are asking for,” she said. “The only thing that was in my power was the advancement of elections, and I have already proposed it. In peace and order, everything can be achieved. In the midst of violence and chaos, it becomes more complicated. It becomes difficult."

Puno lawmakers issued a joint statement demanding that Boluarte resign.

Demonstrations against Boluarte resumed Wednesday after having subsided during the Christmas break. Protesters are demanding early elections and the release of Peru's jailed former President Pedro Castillo.

Castillo was ousted and arrested on Dec. 7 after attempting to dissolve Congress and rule by decree in an effort to avoid impeachment over allegations of corruption.

His removal from office sparked days of nationwide violent protests which have left at least 22 people dead.
