Activists hang anti-Le Pen banner from Eiffel Tower
Greenpeace behind Paris stunt just 2 days before French presidential run-off vote
By Hajer M'tiri
PARIS (AA) - Greenpeace activists on Friday hung a huge banner from Paris’s Eiffel Tower, urging French voters to reject far-right presidential hopeful Marine Le Pen.
Displaying the French national motto "Freedom, Equality, Fraternity" and a #resist hashtag, the dramatic stunt comes just two days before a historic presidential run-off vote.
The 30x10 meter banner was hung from an arch connecting the two pillars of the Eiffel Tower; it hung for around 50 minutes before being removed.
Director General of Greenpeace France Jean-Francois Julliard said the action was aimed at urging people to vote against Le Pen "and everything Front National [FN] represents".
At least three people have been arrested in connection with the protest, according to police.
The Greenpeace initiative closed the iconic tower for a number of hours in the morning; it reopened to tourists around noon local time.
Polls so far show Le Pen losing to centrist independent hopeful Emmanuel Macron on Sunday.
