KABUL, Afghanistan (AA) – Afghan forces have killed more than 100 pro-Daesh militants as part of a crackdown following the killing of 81 people at a protest in the capital Kabul on the weekend.
The Afghan army announced Tuesday that the group's top military commander Sa'ad Emirati was among 122 militants, who claim loyalty to the Syria and Iraq-based militant group, killed in eastern Nangarhar province.
Another 20 militants were arrested while the army also carried out operations in the group's strongholds in the Achin and Kot districts.
Daesh claimed responsibility for Saturday's attack in Kabul, which mainly targeted the Shia Hazara minority and was the first major attack by pro-Daesh militants in Kabul.
During a visit to Nangarhar earlier this month, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani directed the Afghan army to completely eliminate Daesh.
