KIGALI, Rwanda (AA) - African Union Commission chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat on Wednesday condemned recent grenade attacks against civilians in Burundi that left at least five people dead and several wounded.

Mahamat said he learned with “deep dismay” of the attacks.

“The President of the Commission condemns these criminal acts, the actors of which must be found and brought to justice,” said a statement.

“The President of the Commission expresses his sincere condolences to the families of the victims, the government and the people of Burundi, while wishing the injured a speedy recovery,” it added.

Unidentified “terrorists” detonated three grenades Monday around 7 p.m. local time in Mukaza district in the commercial capital Bujumbura, the Security Ministry said Tuesday.

Two grenades exploded in the city center at the main bus station near the former central market of Bujumbura in the Rohero zone. Another was denoted near Jabe market in the Bwiza zone.

“The security ministry strongly condemns those barbaric attacks. This demonstrates that Burundi is also exposed to terrorism risks,” it said.

The ministry pledged to conduct investigations to bring those responsible to justice.

Three people were killed and 15 others injured, most seriously, in a grenade attack Sunday in a bar in Burundi's political capital, Gitega.

Police said a couple having drinks in the bar near the main bus station died in the attack.

Six suspects were arrested, according to police.

That blast occurred one day after a mortar attack near Melchior Ndadaye International Airport in Bujumbura. The Burundian RED-Tabara rebel group, based in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, claimed responsibility for the attack, which caused no damage.
