Airstrikes kill 50 in Syria’s Hama: Local sources

Warplanes that carried out deadly strikes remain unidentified

ANKARA (AA) - At least 50 people were killed by airstrikes in Syria’s Hama province, local sources said Tuesday.

Warplanes struck the Daesh-held villages of Ruwayda and Musteriha in eastern Hama with cluster bombs, according to local sources who spoke anonymously due to fears for their safety.

The warplanes’ country of origin, however, remains unclear.

Casualties from Tuesday’s airstrikes consisted mainly of women and children, the same sources said.

Many of those injured by the strikes could not be treated due to a lack of medical services in the two villages, they added.

Syria has been locked in a vicious civil war since early 2011, when the Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests with unexpected ferocity.

Since then, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed and more than 10 million displaced, according to UN officials.

Assad regime officials, for their part, put the conflict’s total death toll at about 10,000.
