Arab League hosts quadrilateral meeting on Libya

The meeting tackles developments in Libya and efforts to settle the crisis

CAIRO (AA) – The Arab League hosted a meeting on Saturday to discuss the raging conflict in conflict-ridden Libya.

The meeting is attended by Secretary-General of the pan-Arab body Ahmed Abul-Gheit, African Union (AU) envoy Jakaya Kikwete, UN envoy Martin Kobler and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini.

The meeting began with a closed session between the four, according to an Anadolu Agency reporter.

An Arab diplomatic source earlier told Anadolu Agency the meeting would tackle developments in Libya and efforts to settle the crisis and bridge the gap between Libyan rivals.

Earlier this month, Abul-Gheit said contacts were underway to hold a quadrilateral meeting to accelerate peace efforts in Libya.

Libya has been wracked by turmoil since 2011, when a bloody uprising ended with the ouster and death of autocratic leader Muammar Gaddafi after 42 years in power.

In the wake of the uprising, the country’s stark political divisions yielded three rival seats of government, one in Tobruk and two others in capital Tripoli.
