Aussie firefighters battle massive fire engulfing heritage building

ISTANBUL (AA) – Australian fire and rescue teams in New South Wales are engaged in a large-scale operation to combat a massive fire that has completely engulfed a seven-story heritage building in Surry Hills, located near the central business district of Sydney.

The ongoing fire in Surry Hills has been officially designated as a “10th alarm” by Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW), thus the most severe and urgent category of fire.

As a precautionary measure, several buildings in Surry Hills have been evacuated due to the ongoing blaze. Over 100 firefighters, operating from 20 fire trucks and multiple stations, are actively working to contain and extinguish the fire, according to an official statement by New South Wales.

One firefighter has been injured and NSW ambulance personnel on the site are attending to him, the statement said.

The firefighting efforts are expected to continue throughout the night.
