Australia's main opposition coalition splits after policy rift
National Party to sit separately in parliament after talks fail with Liberals
By Anadolu staff
ANKARA (AA) – Australia’s main opposition coalition split Tuesday after a longstanding partnership, local media reported.
National Party leader David Littleproud said his party will not re-enter a Coalition agreement with the Liberal Party following failed talks over climate, energy and nuclear policies, according to ABC News.
“The National Party will sit alone on a principle basis,” he said.
Littleproud said the Coalition has fractured and reunited in the past, expressing hope to rebuild ties with Liberal leader Sussan Ley before the next election.
The Nationals held most of their lower house seats in the recent election, while the Liberals lost ground as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s Labor Party secured a second term.
