ANKARA (AA) - Barcelona lost at Rayo Vallecano 2-1 in a Wednesday Spanish La Liga match, missing out on an opportunity to boost their league lead.

On Tuesday Girona shocked second-place Real Madrid 4-2 in a Spanish La Liga match, encouraging Barcelona on their chances.

Despite the loss, Barcelona are now 11 points clear of Real Madrid with seven matches left in the La Liga.

Home team Rayo Vallecano sealed a narrow win with Alvaro Garcia Rivera and Fran Garcia as the scorers.

Barcelona's Polish star Robert Lewandowski scored a late consolation via a powerful left-footed volley.

Barca kept their lead with 76 points in 31 matches, followed by Real Madrid, which racked up 65.

Mid-table Rayo Vallecano boosted their points to 43.

Meanwhile third-place Atletico Madrid, with 63 points, are breathing down Real Madrid’s neck.

Atletico Madrid took a 3-1 win against Mallorca in a Wednesday match at their home ground Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

The 2022-23 Spanish La Liga season will end after matchday 38 in June. Barcelona are seeking their first domestic title since 2019.
