Toward the end of the race, Chebet, Tsegay and Ngetich pulled ahead, leaving the pack of runners.

Chebet improved on Tsegay's world record by 2.15 seconds, while Ngetich finished second in a time of 14:01.29. Tsegay was third with a time of 14:04.41.

The Prefontaine Classic in the state of Oregon is the only US stop on the Diamond League track and field series.
