Belgian police arrest 12 over Brussels terror attacks

Suspects have alleged links to 2016's bombings at airport, metro station

BRUSSELS (AA) - Police in Brussels arrested at least 12 people suspected of having links to last year's terrorist attacks on the capital’s airport and metro network, the authorities said on Wednesday.

The arrests came as police raided 14 properties across Brussels on Tuesday, the federal prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Suspects were detained as part of an investigation into the attacks on Zaventem Airport and the Maalbeek metro station in March 2016, which left over 30 people dead and hundreds injured.

At the airport, two suicide bombers detonated their devices in the departure hall during morning rush hour on March 22, 2016, claiming the lives of 16 people.

A separate bombing at Maalbeek subway station in the city killed another 16 people.

Daesh claimed responsibility for Belgium's worst terror attacks. Since then, the country has remained on high alert.
