Belgium: Unknown man blows himself up at football pitch

BRUSSELS (AA) - An unknown man died after blowing himself up at a football pitch in the eastern Belgian town of Verviers, the town's vice mayor said on Tuesday.

Hasan Aydin told reporters that the identity of the man has not yet been confirmed, but they suspected he was a former military officer.

Aydin said he believed that the incident did not involve terrorism, but rather seemed like a suicide, since the unknown man, wearing a belt of explosives, chose an empty place to blow himself up.

He added that there were no casualties and security measures were taken.
