Biden marks 1st anniversary of Texas school shooting

Congress should pass gun safety laws to keep weapons of war off streets, says US president

WASHINGTON (AA) - President Joe Biden marked one year Wednesday since a school shooting in the US state of Texas killed 19 children.

"Remembering is important, but it’s also painful. One year ago today, Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, turned into another killing field in America," Biden said in a White House address.

"For the families of the children and educators, we know one year later is still so raw for you," he said.

An 18-year-old gunman entered the school with an assault rifle and fired at least 100 rounds, killing 21 innocent people and injuring 17 others, making it the third-deadliest school shooting in the US, and the ninth-deadliest mass shooting in the US.

The president reiterated his call to ban assault rifles and high-capacity magazines with the ability to shoot bullets without reloading.

He said guns remain the number one killer of children in the US.

"Since Uvalde, our country has experienced a staggering 650 mass shootings," he said.

"We can't end this epidemic until Congress passes some common sense gun safety laws to keep weapons of war off the streets and out of the hands of dangerous people," added the president.
