WASHINGTON (AA) - US President Joe Biden's National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan signed the condolence book Wednesday at the Turkish embassy in Washington, D.C., expressing support to Türkiye after its deadly earthquakes.

"In the wake of the tragic earthquakes in Türkiye, I visited the Turkish Embassy and signed the book of condolences on behalf of the U.S. government. The U.S. offers its heartfelt condolences and our steadfast support. We will continue to stand by our NATO Ally as it recovers," said Sullivan in a tweet.

The mission thanked Sullivan for his visit.

"We thank Mr @JakeSullivan46, U.S. National Security Advisor, for coming over to the Embassy and sharing our sorrow due to the disastrous earthquakes in Türkiye," the embassy tweeted.

The number of people who died in the powerful earthquakes in southern Türkiye has surpassed 12,000, a government agency said early Thursday.

Türkiye’s disaster management agency, AFAD, said 12,391 people were killed and 62,914 others were injured in Monday’s quakes centered in Kahramanmaras province.
