Bosnia unearths remains of missing person from 90s war

BELGRADE, Serbia (AA) - Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday unearthed the remains of at least one person killed during the Bosnian War.

The Missing Persons Institute of Bosnia Herzegovina, a state body which keeps a count of the missing persons of the 90s conflict, said the remains found in the Kacelj region near the city of Foca are thought to belong to a Bosniak civilian.

The remains were transferred to the city of Gorazde for judicial proceedings.

Also, bone samples were taken to determine the identity of the victim by DNA analysis.

Personal items such as shoes and keys thought to belong to the victims were also found.

Between April 1992 and December 1995, an estimated 100,000 people were killed and 2.2 million displaced in Bosnia and Herzegovina. And as many as 50,000 women, mostly Bosniak, were raped.

The Bosnian War was sparked by the break-up of Yugoslavia, which led Bosnia to declare independence in February 1992.

Its capital, Sarajevo, came under attack from Bosnian Serb militias, backed by the Yugoslav army, in what became the longest siege in modern history.
