British Airways' new uniform collection includes hijab option

British fashion designer, tailor Ozwald Boateng creates most sweeping changes in about 20 years

LONDON (AA) - British Airways’ new uniform collection will include tunic and hijab options for female employees, the airline has announced.

British fashion designer and tailor Ozwald Boateng, who comes from a Ghanaian family, created the collection, which was five years in the making and suffered repeated delays, including the coronavirus pandemic.

The airline said in a statement this is the biggest change in its employee uniforms in about 20 years, with some 30,000 employees set to switch to new uniforms as of this spring.

Female cabin crew will also now be allowed to wear jumpsuits.

A tailored three-piece suit has been made for men, while women who do not wish to wear a jumpsuit have dress, skirt, and trouser options.

"Our uniform is an iconic representation of our brand, something that will carry us into our future, representing the very best of modern Britain and helping us deliver a great British original service for our customers," British Airways CEO Sean Doyle said in the statement.

“From the very start this has been about our people. We wanted to create a uniform collection that our people are proud to wear and with the help of over 1,500 colleagues, we are confident that we have delivered this.”
