ATHENS (AA) - A British court handed down a sentence of more than 12 years in prison to a human smuggler of Vietnamese migrants in 2019, media reports said Tuesday.
Marius Mihai Draghicim, 50k, from Romania, will serve 12 years and seven months, according to Skynews.
The court told the defendant he was an "essential cog" in a conspiracy that made "astonishing profits out of the exploitation of people desperate to get to the UK,” it said.
Thirty-nine men, women and children, aged 15 - 44, were found dead in the back of a truck in October 2019 on an industrial estate in the Essex province.
The victims died after running out of air in temperatures of up to 38.5 degrees Celsius (101 Fahrenheit) in the trailer, which was shipped from Belgium to Purfleet docks in Essex.
