Building collapse in Ugandan capital leaves at least 5 dead

Police and army working around the clock to rescue survivors

KAMPALA, Uganda (AA) - At least five people have been confirmed dead with many still trapped under the rubble after a building collapsed Sunday in Uganda’s capital.

The police and army said five bodies have been retrieved so far from the debris of the building under construction in the Kisenyi suburb of Kampala.

The building reportedly collapsed during heavy rainfall.

An eyewitness, Stephen Kato, said many people were buried in the rubble, including food vendors, motorcycle transport operators and bystanders.

“Five bodies have been recovered so far. The police and army are still working hard to save those still alive and to retrieve more bodies," said Kampala central mayor Salim Uhuru.

Uhuru said it is becoming common in Uganda for buildings under construction to collapse and kill people, which needs to be investigated.

According to police, at least four people have been killed in the last two months under such circumstances.

Security at the scene of the accident has been reinforced with many police and soldiers.
