Borisov and members of his Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party were detained during a special operation concerning 120 cases of misuse of European Union funds.

Former Minister of Finance Vladislav Goranov, former head of the budget committee Menda Stojanova and former head of the government's information service Sevdalina Arnaudova were also detained.

The European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kovesi announced earlier that authorities are investigating more than 120 Reports of Crimes in Bulgaria.

The cases refer to various types of suspected crimes including fraudulent use of European funds, mismanagement of public funds, misuse of agricultural subsidies, violations in the field of infrastructure as well as compensations and recovery aid packages following the coronavirus pandemic.

The Interior Ministry clarified that searches and seizures are being carried out at various addresses.

Kovesi is on a visit to Bulgaria at the invitation of Prime Minister Kiril Petkov.

She said an annual report will be published later this week or early next week, with information and statistics on cases and investigations conducted.

Borisov served as prime minister from 2009 to 2013, 2014 to 2017 and 2017 to 2021.

He is the nation’s second-longest serving prime minister.
