Bulgarian parliament approves PM's resignation

Newly elected President Rumen Radev to prepare Black Sea state for early elections

BELGRADE, Serbia (AA) – Bulgaria’s parliament overwhelmingly approved the resignation of Prime Minister Boyko Borissov's government on Wednesday.

In the 240-seat assembly, 220 deputies supported the resignation, while two abstained.

At the end of the second year of his term, Borissov said he left both the Black Sea country and its economy balanced and stable.

Borissov's resignation came a day after Rumen Radev, the candidate of the main opposition Socialist Party, won the second round of the nation’s presidential elections over Parliament Speaker Tsetska Tsacheva.

The prime minister's resignation will lead the state to snap elections after the new president dismisses parliament and sets up a temporary technocratic government to prepare the country for early elections.

Even though the country is a member of NATO and the EU, many in Bulgaria still have a favorable view of ties with its traditional ally Russia.
