Canada: Bodies of teen murder suspects found

Nationwide manhunt lasted two weeks, covering thousands of kilometers

By Barry Ellsworth

TRENTON, Canada (AA) – Police in Canada said Wednesday they were “confident” they had found the bodies of two teenagers suspected of murdering a young couple and an elderly man.

Kam McLeod, 19, and his childhood friend Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, were the subject of an intensive manhunt that lasted more than two weeks and covered thousands of kilometers in five Canadian provinces, most in the heavily forested and swampy area in the north.

They were charged with second-degree murder in the death of 64-year-old Leonard Dyck, a university professor in British Columbia, where the two suspects were also from.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) also wanted the pair in connection with the shooting deaths of tourists Lucas Fowler, a 23-year-old Australian, and his American girlfriend, Chynna Deese, 24, whose bodies were found along the Alaska Highway in British Columbia.

The manhunt involved the RCMP, police from various provinces, military and private aircraft, dog-sniffing units, ATVs, armored vehicles and drones.

The discovery of a damaged boat near the Nelson River in Manitoba province Friday led to a search by the RCMP dive team but turned up nothing.

On Friday, personal items belonging to the pair were found on a riverbank. The RCMP said the find contained a “critical piece of evidence”.

That narrowed down the search, and two bodies were found Wednesday in dense bush in the wilderness about a kilometer from the location of the personal items.
