Canada considers diversifying fighter jet purchases beyond F-35 deal: Defense minister

David McGuinty says government open to joint ventures including Swedish Gripen production

By Yasin Gungor

ISTANBUL (AA) - Canada is considering diversifying its fighter jet purchases from multiple companies to meet defense requirements as a review of F-35 fighter jets purchases continues, Defense Minister David McGuinty said Sunday.

The government is "grateful for any forthcoming offer" and open to joint ventures that create Canadian jobs, McGuinty told the Canadian CTV news.

Swedish company Saab's CEO has confirmed recent talks with Ottawa about potentially manufacturing Gripen fighter jets on Canadian soil. McGuinty said such an agreement would align with Canada's goal to build a strong domestic defense industrial sector.

The comments come as Prime Minister Mark Carney's government reviews a 2023 deal to purchase 88 American-made F-35 fighter jets, of which 16 are currently in production, due to rising costs and geopolitical considerations.

McGuinty said the review focuses on industrial benefits and other features of the F-35 acquisition, emphasizing the government will take the necessary time for a "responsible decision."

No new timeline has been set for a decision on the fighter jet procurement.
