Canadian nurse pleads guilty to 8 counts of murder

TRENTON, Ont. (AA) - A former nurse pled guilty in court Thursday to eight counts of first-degree murder in connection to the deaths of nursing home residents in the province of Ontario.

The murders make Elizabeth Wettlaufer, 49, one of Canada’s worst serial killers.

Wettlaufer admitted she used insulin to cause the deaths of her victims, as well as hurt six others while the residents were living at three different nursing homes and a private home in and around Woodstock, located about 86 miles (138 kilometers) west of Toronto.

She also pleaded guilty to four counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

The murders took place over the last 10 years and the guilty plea comes seven months after her arrest.

Wettlaufer told the court she felt rage with her position as a registered nurse and her life in general, and she had the “urge to kill,” CTV News reported.

She also admitted that after the murders, she felt “like a pressure had been relieved from me, like pressure had been relieved from my emotions,” CTV reported.

Wettlaufer will be sentenced at a later date.
