Champions League: Juventus risk last 8 hopes, City wins

ANKARA (AA) - Atletico Madrid shut out Italian football heavyweights Juventus 2-0 in UEFA Champions League round of 16 game late Wednesday.

Atletico Madrid central defenders Jose Maria Gimenez and Diego Godin's late winners brought victory for the Spanish team at Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid.

Juventus now have a mountain to climb going into the second leg in Turin that will be held on Tuesday, March 12.

In the other match of the night, English powerhouse Manchester City won against Germany's Schalke 3-2 in Gelsenkirchen.

Visitors Manchester City star Sergio Aguero put his team in front in 18th minute.

However Schalke midfielder Nabil Bentaleb's two first-half penalties made the score 2-1 for the home team.

Man City's German midfielder Leroy Sane - a former Schalke player - scored the equalizer in 85th minute.

Manchester City won the clash after English midfielder Raheem Sterling put the ball into Schalke net in 90th minute.

The away victory boosted Man City's hopes for the next phase, Champions League quarter finals but their Argentinian defender Nicolas Otamendi will miss the return match as he was shown a red card.

The second leg will be played in Manchester on March 12.
