ISTANBUL (AA) - China has launched a new satellite-based short messaging service using the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) to maintain communication during emergencies when mobile networks are unavailable, state media reported Friday.

The service, launched by China Space-Time Information Co. in partnership with the country’s leading telecom operators, is designed to improve connectivity in remote regions, at sea, and during disaster response operations, Xinhua News Agency reported.

"It marks a significant step toward bringing satellite communication technology to the public," the company said, adding that it integrates BeiDou's capabilities into daily life, offering tangible technological protection.

Compatible smartphones can now send and receive text messages directly through BeiDou satellites, bypassing traditional cellular networks.

China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom have incorporated the service into their networks, allowing users to access it without changing SIM cards or phone numbers, the company said.

Around 60 smartphone models from major Chinese brands currently support the feature.

China Space-Time Information specializes in satellite navigation and communications, big data, artificial intelligence, and geospatial remote sensing.
