China records 1st-ever sighting of wild Siberian tiger quintuplets

ISTANBUL (AA) – China has documented its first recorded case of wild Siberian tiger quintuplets after a female tiger and her five cubs were captured on camera in a national park in the country’s northeast, authorities said Friday.

Infrared cameras recorded the tiger family in November inside the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, according to the park administration.

A park ranger first spotted the animals through a real-time monitoring system after an automated alert, observing a slender, clearly striped female followed by five cubs, before issuing warnings to nearby villages and reporting the sighting to authorities.

The same tiger family was later captured by another infrared camera at a different location, the administration said.

The female tiger, identified in monitoring records as GH005F, likely gave birth to the cubs in June, park administration head Duan Zhaogang said, according to Xinhua.

He added that consultations with international experts confirmed the sighting as China’s first documented case of wild Siberian tiger quintuplets.
